Yoga is an ancient physical,mental and spiritual practice that has its roots in india.The word ‘yoga’ is derived from Sanskrit and it means to join or to unite symbolising the union of body and consciousness.It was hither to confined to India but it is being practised in various forms around the world.The popularity of yoga is at its zenith today.
Keeping this in mind ,United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21st of June as the International Yoga Day vide resolution no. 69/131. It aims to create awareness globally of the multiple benefits of practising yoga.
It was our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi who proposed the day to be declared as “International Yoga Day” .
The Prime Minister in his address to the United Nations General Assembly said “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition .Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, a holistic approach that is valuable to our health and our well being. Yoga is not just about exercise: it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself , the world and the nature”. Yoga is more than a physical activity .In this regard the World Health Organisation has urged its member states to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity which is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide and a key risk factor for non –communicable diseases such as cardio-vascular diseases,cancer and diabetes.We ,at Jnana Bandhu,celebrated International Yoga Day in our campus. Sagar V S lecturer in Geography demonstrated certain asanas on the stage along with 800 of our students .He dwelt upon the need to practice yoga and the benefits accruing thereof. He also taught beginners some simple yoga postures. There was warming up exercise which served as a prelude to the above programme. Eight hundred students performed
ekapadasana ,simple surya namaskara ,vakrasana,veerabhadrasana ,pranayama and uthkatasana together.
